|Ideally, children should be supervised at all times by a responsible adult. However, today's family situations often cannot accommodate this idea. The number of school-age children home alone has risen over the last few years. The main factors are thought to be more working parents and single parent households.|
The Home Alone Program being hosted in Didsbury on June 7th is a great opportunity for parents to prepare and educate their children on the responsibilities of staying home alone.
The program is designed to provide children 10 years of age and older with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short periods of time.
It runs from 9 am to 2 pm at Didsbury Neighbourhood Place. Course cost is $40 and money very well spent. A sibling, aged 8 or 9, can attend as well, for $30.
The program focuses on small group discussions, problem solving, role-playing, and instructor-led demonstrations.
Upon the completion of this program, each child will to able to:
* Establish a daily routine.
* Manage their time more efficiently.
* Identify what responsibilities they have while being home alone.
* Demonstrate what to do in case of an emergency and how and when to call 911.
* Understand the basics of first aid procedures.
Call DNP at 403-335-8719 to register before May 31st. Pre-payment is required to reserve your child(rens') space.
Didsbury Neighbourhood Place is located at 1606 - 14th Street, beside the Town Office.
